Jordan Spencer on the pursuit to become a firefighter and his advice to others

I have long wanted to become a firefighter and this stems down to attending an open day in London when I was 17. As soon as I tried the physical tests, tried on the breathing apparatus (BA) set and learnt about the job/experiences of other firefighters, I knew this is something I wanted to pursue as a career.

When I first applied I was unsuccessful. This was mainly down to nerves and lack of in-depth research about the job. I looked at my feedback and decided to attend the Positive Action workshops that the fire service provided. This was a massive help as I was able to sit down with staff and improve on areas where I went wrong. When the next recruitment was available, I corrected my mistakes and became confident in my approach and was therefore successful.

I currently work on a four-on-four-off off shift pattern, with two days and two nights. This is ideal for me as I can plan things around my shift and days off.

The best part of being a firefighter is attending incidents and working with a good watch and engaging with the community.

I have learnt many skills within the fire service for example trauma care and fire safety, and these can be used in everyday life outside of work which makes it more beneficial. As I progress in my career there will be more things to develop as well as more skills obtained. Proudest moments so far are learning to drive the truck, attending many incidents and passing management exams for future pathways.

My advice to someone looking to join the fire service would be to attend workshops if possible. Try and research the job online or visit your local fire station and liaise with staff. If you fail at any stage, don’t give up if it is something you really want to do as a career.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is recruiting wholetime firefighters. Applications close at midday on Wednesday 3 April 2024.
