Week 2 - Prevention and Inclusion

Getting more technical input and some practical, the second week of training involved manual handling; due to the nature of our job we need to lift correctly and store equipment correctly to prevent injury.

We learnt to parade in more depth, which even though it’s completely new to me I’m coping well with. Something else I’ve learnt is the ability to identify equipment on the appliance (appliances are also known as fire trucks or fire tenders) and where each item is stored correctly. This is necessary to be able to carry out inventories on the appliance.

Following on from this we had knot training on around six different knots, something I need to master and am well on the way to doing so; I can achieve at least four out of six.

During the classroom input we focused a lot on diversity, equality and inclusion as it’s a big factor within this Service and our community. We also had a great deal of input regarding support networks and wellbeing; there if ever we were to have an issue emotionally or physically. It’s great to see just how much support is available, for us and others.

Overall week two has been tough but I am slowly getting there and trying hard each day and night to improve myself. There’s still a huge amount to learn and focus on in the next coming weeks, but I’m ready.
