Meet Leanne, our Principal Officer Support Team Leader who joined DFRS as an apprentice nearly a decade ago

Leanne Mellors, our Principal Officer Support Team Leader, tells us about her nearly decade long career with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) that began when she applied for an apprenticeship.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

Following the completion of my BTEC Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 at Derby Roundhouse College, I decided against pursuing further education at university level. Instead, I was keen to begin employment and start my career. With little previous work experience, I knew an apprenticeship would be the perfect starting point.

What skills did you gain and how has that helped shape your role today?

I began my apprenticeship BTEC Diploma in Business Administration (QCF) Level 3 in the Transport Department at the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service in 2014. The 12-month apprenticeship course covered valuable units supporting personal and professional development, learning business administration skills, minute taking and developing confidence to implement change all whilst working in a highly respected Service.

At the end of my apprenticeship, I’d gained a Diploma, valuable work experience and the confidence I needed to apply for full-time employment. I knew I wanted to continue my career within the fire service and was keen to expand my opportunities and knowledge as much as possible. I therefore successfully started my employment career as a Service Centre Assistant supporting HR and recruitment, before working in Occupational Health, the Training Department and later becoming a Personal Assistant to the Director of Corporate Services. I was then promoted temporarily to my current role as Principal Officer Support Team Leader, Line Managing two teams and providing PA support to the Chief Fire Officer. I have now worked in the Fire Service for over nine years and experienced working in five different departments.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of undertaking an apprenticeship?

If I could give one piece of advice? Take every opportunity that comes your way and push yourself to continually progress.
