Why did you choose an apprenticeship with DFRS?
I chose an apprenticeship with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) because it would provide me with valuable experience in an office environment and teach me how to effectively work there. It was also important to me that I knew I would be able to secure a good job in the fire service by working for the DFRS, and I later found out that there are many career options within the fire service that are available to me.
What skills have you gained from undertaking an apprenticeship?
My apprenticeship has allowed me to learn new skills, to gain a deeper understanding of the responsibilities at work, and to build my knowledge of different works related to stations as well as my relationship with other members of the workforce over the course of the apprenticeship.
Since I've been working in the Service, I've become proficient at using a variety of websites for the purpose of my job, and I've been given free training to help me understand how they work. Additionally, I have been allowed to attend engagement days and events like the Emergency Services Show at NEC Birmingham to gain a better understanding of what's going on within the fire sector, now and in the future.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of undertaking an apprenticeship?
If you are looking to undertake an apprenticeship, it is important to look for one that will allow you to gain a broad range of skills.
