At 14.42 hours today (Monday 29 January), firefighters were called to the River Derwent, near to Derby River Gardens off Meadow Road, following reports of a person in the water.
Crews from Ascot Drive and Kingsway, supported by the Water Rescue Unit, attended the incident alongside Derbyshire Constabulary and East Midlands Ambulance Service.
A woman was helped out of the water by a member of the public prior to the arrival of emergency services.
She has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Police remain at the scene while enquiries continue to establish the circumstances around the incident.
