Firefighters extinguish Chesterfield kitchen fire

Derbyshire Firefighters extinguished a Chesterfield kitchen fire involving a grandmother and her family members.

Firefighters from Chesterfield and Staveley were called to the incident on St Augustines Mount in Birdholme at 17.25 hours on Friday 29 November 2024.

On arrival, crews were met by a fire that had started in the kitchen of the property.

All occupants were out of the property prior to the arrival of fire crews.

Group Manager David Diggins said:

“Luckily on this occasion everyone was out of the property in time, however, it emphasises the importance of staying safe in the kitchen.

“The hob is one of the most dangerous household appliances. It’s important to ensure the area is kept clear at all times, in case it’s accidentally left on or turned on, because, as you can see, it can have devastating effects.”

A fire investigation concluded the most probable cause of the fire to be accidental, due to household items left on top of the cooker.

The incident follows a trend predicted by Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, who foresee a rise in accidental house fires in the build up to the holiday season. Group Manager David Diggins commented:

“The Christmas and New Year period bring with it lots of food and gifts, much of which is highly flammable. Please be vigilant over the holidays, especially with little ones. The best way to stay safe is by completing our home fire safety check. Simply answer a few simple questions, and you will get fire safety advice tailored to your household.”
