Fire - Twyford Street Derby

Up to 100 homes and some businesses have been evacuated as Firefighters continue to fight a fire at a commercial garage on Twyford Street, Derby.  Properties have been evacuated on Harriett Street, Grove Street, Twyford Street and some businesses have also been evacuated on Normanton Road.

Firefighters were called to attend the fire at 18.56 this evening.  Crews from Nottingham Road, Kingsway, Ascot Drive, Alfreton, Ilkeston, stapleford, Long Eaton, Clay Cross and Castle Donnington are in attendance fighting the fire.

Speaking from the scene, Group Manager Sean Wells said: “A decision was taken to evacuate people living and working on several roads surrounding the fire due to the presence of commercial cylinders.

“A refuge centre has been set up for those evacuated at St. Augustine’s Church, Upper Dale Road, DE23 8BP where they can seek shelter until the incident is resolved.

“We are working with our emergency service partners and the emergency planning team, and as soon as we are satisfied that the cylinders have been isolated and pose no risk to residents, we will let residents know that they are able to return to their homes.”

Normanton Road, Twyford Street, Harriet Street and Grove Street remain closed whilst the incident is ongoing.

It is anticipated that the incident will remain ongoing for the next couple of hours.
