Organisation carrying out the consultation
Derby City Council in partnership with Derbyshire County Council
Why are they consulting?
On 29 April the Domestic Abuse Bill was signed into law. The Domestic Abuse Act will provide further protections to the millions of people who experience domestic abuse and strengthen measures to tackle perpetrators.
In response to the Act, the City and County Councils are undertaking this survey to determine the level of need for support for those affected by domestic abuse and the responses we need to put in place.
The Act defines a wide-ranging legal definition of domestic abuse which incorporates a range of abuses beyond physical violence, including emotional, coercive or controlling behaviour, and economic abuse.
The measures include important new protections and support for victims ensuring that abusers will no longer be allowed to directly cross-examine their victims in the family and civil courts, and giving victims better access to special measures in the courtroom to help prevent intimidation – such as protective screens and giving evidence via video link.
It is important that we gain the views and experiences of our residents to inform the assessment and development of our strategies. We are keen to hear from people across the city and county, to enable us to build a better picture of peoples understanding of domestic abuse and the support that is needed to protect victims.
We would like people’s views on Domestic Abuse even if you or someone you know hasn’t been directly affected.
Who are they consulting?

- those with lived experience of domestic abuse
