Awareness days

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) hold awareness days which are designed to give an insight into the recruitment process and the diverse role of a firefighter.

Being a firefighter can offer you an exciting and rewarding career.  Did you know firefighters also educate the community on fire safety; rescue people and animals, protect buildings; respond to road traffic collisions, carry out water rescues and much more?

Anyone can apply to attend an awareness day however we actively encourage women, those from black or ethnic minority backgrounds and new and emerging communities, to consider a career as a firefighter.

For a variety of reasons, historically women, black and minority ethnic groups and members of new and emerging communities have not viewed working for the fire and rescue service as a career choice.  This is reflected in the low numbers of people from these groups, carrying out operational roles.  DFRS aims to have a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community.

Overview of the day

  1. Opportunity to carry out job related tasks for example: casualty drag, equipment carry, ladder climb, hose run, ladder lift and equipment assembly.*
  2. Interview techniques and an introduction to the STAR model (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
  3. Advice on fitness and building strength.
  4. Advice on qualifications.
  5. Information on the benefits of joining Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service
  6. Firefighters on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

*these may vary from event to event.

Places are limited and preference will be given to those from under-represented groups. It is intended that awareness sessions will run throughout the year providing an opportunity for all to attend.

Attendance at an awareness day does not guarantee, nor preclude, progression into any selection process for the role of firefighter at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.
