Have a Go Sessions

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) hold sessions where you can have a go at some of the activities involved in the role of a firefighter, discover more about this diverse role and find out about the recruitment process.

Being a firefighter can offer you an exciting and rewarding career. Did you know firefighters also educate the community on fire safety; rescue people and animals, protect buildings; respond to road traffic collisions, carry out water rescues and much more?

Anyone can attend a Have a Go session, and we encourage people of all backgrounds, genders, communities and disabled people to consider a career as a firefighter.

For a variety of reasons, women, black and minority ethnic groups, disabled people and members of new and emerging communities have not, in the past, viewed working for the fire and rescue service as a career choice. We want you to know that if this sounds like you, we’d love for you to come and find out more. Why not have a go?

DFRS is committed to building a workforce that better reflects the diversity of the communities that we serve.

Overview of the day

  1. Carry out job related tasks, for example: casualty drag, equipment carry, ladder climb, hose run, ladder lift, and equipment assembly.*
  2. Learn about the varied role of a firefighter.
  3. Receive information on entry requirements and recruitment process.
  4. Meet operational staff, ask questions and learn from their experiences.

Places are limited and preference will be given to those from under-represented groups. It is intended that Have a Go sessions will run regularly, providing an opportunity for all to attend. Once you have registered your interest, keep an eye on our Careers page for new dates.

Attendance at a session does not guarantee, nor preclude, progression into any selection process for the role of firefighter at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Register your interest

We are running regular Have a Go sessions and once you have registered your interest you will be emailed a link to book your place. Places are limited per session but will run throughout the year, which should provide an opportunity for all to attend.
