Question Your Perception

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is challenging you to question your perception of fire.

People often have an unrealistic perception of fire and underestimate how quickly it can spread and how the smoke and flames can cause serious injury or even death.

Research indicates that very few people consider fire as a risk and those who are not actively encouraged to think about the risk often will not do so.

The Kitchen... Have you considered the risks?

More than 50 percent of fires start in the kitchen, but by taking a few simple steps you can make your home safer from the risk of fire.

  • DON'T leave cooking food unattended
  • DON'T answer the phone, while cooking
  • DON'T cook when tired
  • DON'T cook after you have had an alcoholic drink, buy a takeaway instead
  • DO replace your chip pan with an electronic deep fat fryer

In the event of a cooking fire, follow these simple steps:

  • Turn off the heat under a pan or grill only if it is safe to do so
  • Close the door to contain the fire and smoke damage
  • Get out of the house; call the fire and rescue service and stay out.

Do not attempt to tackle the fire. GET OUT, STAY OUT, DIAL 999

Smoke Alarms... Get an early warning

Make sure working smoke alarms are fitted on each level of your home and test smoke alarms weekly and don't be tempted to remove the batteries to use them for any other purpose.
