Funding success for new Fire Control System

09/03/12

A collaborative bid for government funding by Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire fire and rescue services to implement a shared system in their emergency control rooms has been successful.

The three services will receive a combined total of £5.4 million as a result of the Department for Communities and Local Government's Mobilising System Funding Bid process. It means that Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire will share a common system to mobilise firefighters, fire engines and other resources to emergency incidents, but will function independently through three individual command and control rooms.

News of the bid's success, along with the progress made to date, places all three services in a strong position to improve service delivery to the communities of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire, as well as improving the technology and resilience of the Control function through working together.

Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive for Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, Sean Frayne, said: "This is fantastic news, not just for Derbyshire but for the project as a whole. The funding along with the recent agreement of the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Authority to accommodate the Command and Control function at Ascot Drive Community Fire Station, places Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service in a strong position to improve service delivery to the communities of Derbyshire and enable increased firefighter safety, whilst improving resilience across the three counties.

"I look forward to continuing our collaboration with colleagues in our neighbouring fire and rescue services, and seeing the project developed through to completion."

The collaboration has already seen a great deal of work being carried out whilst awaiting the outcome of the bid. This includes the establishment of project teams for each individual service, as well as joint programme and project groups and the appointment of a Programme Manager.
