Chesterfield Borough Council Authorise Sprinkler Pilot

22/06/12

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) is delighted to learn that Chesterfield Borough Council has agreed proposals that will see the retro fitting of domestic sprinkler systems in suitable sheltered housing.

At a recent meeting of Chesterfield Borough Council, the Head of Housing submitted a report to advise Members of a new advance in fire safety and the opportunity to become a champion for the domestic sprinkler initiative. Also included in the proposal was an opportunity to match fund with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Authority, to fund domestic sprinkler installations.

The Council resolved to pro-actively support this life saving initiative through DFRS and pilot an installation of a retro-fit sprinkler system in suitable sheltered housing and others identified as high risk properties. An agreement to amend the Housing Capital Programme 2012/13 will ensure that all future Council new builds will be fitted with the required plumbing and water pressure to assist with any future sprinkler installations.

Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive, Sean Frayne said "I am delighted that Chesterfield Borough Council has agreed to support the domestic sprinkler initiative in this way. This clearly demonstrates how forward thinking Chesterfield Borough Council is and is a clear indication of how important they take the safety of their residents.

"As Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive I look forward to other districts following in these very important footsteps. Their decision to support DFRS will ensure the maximum possible fire safety provision is given to those who need it"

DFRS is already working in partnership with social housing providers; Derby Homes and South Yorkshire Housing Association to promote domestic sprinkler systems and has formal agreements in place. DFRS is also currently working with Rykneld Homes and looking to other housing providers, builders and developers within Derbyshire to champion the inclusion of domestic sprinklers, which will significantly enhance fire safety within the home and drastically reduce death and serious injury as a result of fire.
