Don't Drown in Toxic Smoke

Don't Drown in Toxic Smoke

The 'Don't drown in toxic smoke' campaign was launched in October 2009 and is aimed at reminding people to check their smoke alarms are working on a weekly basis.

The campaign launched with the hard-hitting television advert which can be viewed below.

Toxic smoke from a fire affects your ability to breathe just like drowning, after two or three breaths you can be rendered unconscious. The best way to buy the precious seconds needed to escape is to have a working smoke alarm.

Buying a smoke alarm is not enough - check you smoke alarm is working weekly

The key things you can do to protect your home and family from fire are:

  • Fit a smoke alarm on each level of the property
In a fire an early warning is vital. Battery operated smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, or consider installing a mains powered alarm.
  • Test smoke alarms weekly
A smoke alarm can buy valuable time, if it's working.
  • Plan your escape route
Make sure you and your family know the quickest way out in the event of fire. Consider an alternative route in case your usual is blocked.
  • Stay safe in the kitchen
This is the area where most house fires start. It only takes a minute to check electrical appliances are switched off. And never leave cooking unattended.
